CHAPTER NINETEEN

Lunch & The Journey Home

Monday, November 20, 1724,

His mouth half open, Linde paused as if the air had left his lungs. Then he said almost in a whisper, “is…Lieutenant Thomas Waldron.”

Sheldon frowned and repeated, “Lieutenant Thomas Waldron…I don’t believe I know the name. Who is this gentleman Simon?”

“Ah sir, I believe he lives in Dover and has several substantial holdings there. He is often here speaking with the deputies on many matters.”

“I see,” he took a breath, “thank you Simon. You have, as always, been quite efficient and helpful.”

Still a little flustered at having to endure the questions and the difficulty with the appointment, he nodded, pushed his spectacles up his nose, “Sir, I try to keep things moving in an orderly fashion.”

“And Simon, I might add I will wish you a pleasant afternoon.”

“And you as well Mister Sheldon.”

Sheldon tapped his stick on the tile and walked over to Tamsen and John and said, “I assume you have not had anything to eat?”

John replied, “No, Mister Sheldon. Other than a mid-morning snack on the way we have not had a thing.”

Sheldon smiled, “Well then, if you have the time, I know a nice tavern not far from here where we can be served. And as it happens, it is on your way to the ferry. Would that be acceptable?”

John cut his eyes to Tamsen who was smiling and then back to Sheldon, “We would be delighted to join you sir. Our horses are stabled just two blocks from here.”

Sheldon nodded as he picked up his heavy black coat and slipped his arms into the sleeves and said, “Splendid, my carriage is outside. Let me take you to the stable and then we can all go together.”

***

The Inn was two blocks off of the main street and a welcome change from the crowded public house where Tamsen and John had enjoyed mulled cider that morning. Many tables were full of customers, but there was a quiet atmosphere that the other ‘Ordinary’ house lacked. They had ridden in Sheldon’s rented carriage to the stable. There they hitched their horses to the rear of the vehicle and enjoyed the comfort of it on the way to the Inn. The weather was clearing and there were patches of blue sky in the west. It was below freezing and even a slight breeze evoked the piercing cold.

The Inn was housed in a three-story tan clapboard structure with two wood steps leading to a wide front porch. On arriving Sheldon showed them a small open barn across the street to stable their mounts. The space was tended by a young lad who took a few pence to keep their horses out of the weather.

Entering the Inn, Tamsen was greeted by a large room just inside. Gray stone fireplaces flanked the room on either side. Across the back she could see a dark wood bar where several customers were deep in conversation. Round dark wood tables and comfortable chairs with rush seats dotted the main area.
